Alexa came home with this cute little book the colored in school. She came home and read it to me. I am so excited that her reading skills are improving in leaps and bounds! She can read most on any stag 1 reading book. She is doing well with sounding out words she doesnt know. This is a HUGE milestone for Alexa. People with Down Syndrome have a harder time learning to read, and seeing her be at just about grade level of “normal” kids after missing 1 1/2 YEARS of school is just proof that you should not limit ANY child-weather they have a “diagnoses” or not!
Personally I find if you have low expectations of ANY child they wont really strive to go past them. But if you challenge your child and make them feel anything is possible they try harder!
I am proud to say I have never limited Alexa-EVER! Nor have I let our public school system. She has amazed many people, and I am so proud of her!
There was a BIG deal about holding her back in first grade due to the No Child Left Behind policy. While it may be a good policy for some-I found that they may also be PUSHING kids who aren’t ready for the next grade through, just because. That is not necessarily a good thing IMO.
OK I feel like I could get into a whole big thing here, along with my personal expieriences and this isnt why I was posting this! LOL! I am just a proud mama-who had to share this cute little event!
So here she is reading the story to Amber

I’m sitting here with a smile on my face and in my heart. Thank you for sharing such a precious moment.
Lauren..that was just the sweetest thing I have watched all day. You should be so proud of her!!
I got all teary watching this. I have only “seen” your kids in pictures. It’s so cute to see them “moving and talking”. It’s so great to have those “moments” when siblings actually get along and help eachother. 🙂 Way to go….Amber and Alexa!!!!
Lauren, your girls are so cute! How wonderful that Alexa is reading, and there is nothing better than having older siblings read to younger ones. Thanks for sharing.
That is a wonderful video! Your daughters are so cute and way to go Alexa!
I hardly ever comment..usually bc I’m multi-tasking or holding the baby, but I had to share about this video. I love how gentle and loving Alexa is towards her little sister. As a mom of a child with a learning disability, I have to totally agree with your comments about not limiting your child and staying on top of the school to make sure they aren’t either. Thanks so much for sharing.
That is awesome!!! What a wonderful keepsake! Keep up the great work!!
Lauren, that is awesome! Alexa is a wonderful and patient big sis! She must have the best parents/teachers in the world!!
That was such a sweet video…
Super cute for you, Alexa and the whole family. I am sure you will treasure this as the kids get older!
Lauren, that is beautiful. My first year teaching I was a para for a little girl with down’s syndrome. so the children all have a special place in my heart. It is so wonderful that you have such great expectations for Alexa. Lucky her and lucky you. 🙂
Oh my gosh that is the cutest thing ever. So adorable I have to finally post after lurking in your blog and your posts now for about a year! You and your family are truely so beautiful.
Amy 🙂
That was the cutest thing ever…I love the smilebox site…There is nothing wrong with being a proud Mom! Your daughters..and your son during soccer are adorable. Chris
Well Lauren, I must say that I have had a pretty emotional day, but the sight of your darling Alexa teaching Amber to read is such a sweet delight. It is so fun to “hear” their voices. Thank you so very much for sharing your family.
What a sweet, sweet video! That is a precious memory I know you will cherish forever! So good to hear Alexa doing well and Amber having time with her big sis!
I need more Kleenex!!! What a sweet video!
Oh Lauren. That is AWESOME! Too sweet. Wow! Now off to find more Kleenex.
Oh Lauren……that is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen on your blog!!! I think it’s because, like Nicole said, we’ve always seen you and your family in pics, but we haven’t actually heard their sweet voices and seen them moving! It was SO touching to see Alexa helping Amber along, and with her arm around her the whole time!! And, it was so fun to hear the joy and pride in your voice (haven’t heard your voice either! Hahaha!)…..LOVED this whole thing! You might need to put a tear warning on these Smileboxes in the future though!! Thanks for sharing, Lauren. Hugs!
How wonderful Lauren! They are so cute together. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Lauren this is priceless!! So sweet seeing the two of them sitting there together – made me weepy! 🙂
Lauren, this is sooo adorable! Alexa teaching her little sister Amber how to read…how proud mommy must feel!!! Thanks so much for sharing, brought back so many memories of when my kids were small.
What a precious video!! So sweet!
Lauren, what an amazing kiddo you have! You are an awesome mother! I totally agree about the NCLB and passing kids on that aren’t necessarily ready for the next grade. The teacher I had during student teaching once told me that it takes an act of God for a child to be held back, no matter how much it would benefit them. It makes my heart sad…
Alexa – YOU are an AWESOME big sister…do you think you could convince Mom to bring you down and visit to teach Shannon the ropes??? I would love for her to have a role model like you. I can see why Mom is so proud of you!
Lauren- I’ve only heard the girls when I’m on the phone with you, but I LOVE seeing them together like that! How awesome, and of course, I got all teary – it’s like a Hallmark commercial with the music and everything…it was killin’ me.
Beautiful, and I know I’ve said it before…GOOD FOR YOU for sticking to your guns to do what’s right by your children, not just what everyone else thinks will be good for your children. You’re a FABULOUS Mom, and those kiddos are SO lucky to have you in their corner!
awww..that is the sweetest video, you must have been beaming with pride!
That is adorable and was a total tear jerker for me. SO sweet for a big sis to teach the little sis how to read. Awwww
Thanks for sharing, like others posted we read the stories and see the pictures of your kids, but with this it’s almost like actually getting to meet them! Alexa is remembered in my daily prayers, and it was wonderful to actually see her in “action” Thanks for sharing your family.
You and your family are inspirational. Hugs!
Lauren, Thanks for sharing one of your precious moments with we your readers. This is one of the most touching moments I’ve ever experienced. Your girls are so beautiful and I can’t express it enough how little Alexa touches my heart.
Have a wonderful 8th. year Birthday Party Princess Alexa.
Hugs,
Auntie, Gail
cute, sweet, preciously heart warming!
Oh Lauren, how did you hold the video camera so still without crying? They are so precious, and to hear your voice……I want to cry. I have this smile that won’t go away now. Thank you so much for sharing them with all of us.
Miss Alexa – you are an awesome big sister and I loved your story so much. Keep it up; you’re doing great!
Lauren,
That was just about the most precious thing I’ve ever seen! Of course we’ve seen the pictures of your kiddos, but to HEAR them & see them moving – thank you! I’m with everyone else – I need to go find some more Kleenex!!
Lauren – that is adorable! Thank you so much for sharing this! What gorgeous girls!
I am almost in tears watching this! How special that Alexa not only can do this but that she is being sooo.. patient with her sister. My brother who has Downs is 24 and can’t do this but I know if he had been worked with , he definitely could have. Nevertheless, I love him for all of his many other attributes, but most of all his unconditional love! Thanks for sharing and Happy Birthday Alexa!
